Choosing Our First Kitchen: Champagne Taste on a Beer Budget

Choosing Our First Kitchen: Champagne Taste on a Beer Budget

A couple of years ago I had the exciting (and slightly daunting) task of choosing a new kitchen for our very first house. Like many people, I had champagne taste on a beer budget — but that wasn’t going to stop me from finding something I truly loved that looked beautiful too.

I’d long admired the uber‑cool, bespoke designs from @devolkitchens, especially their Shaker style range. It’s a classic look with a colourful twist, and Devol certainly make it feel timeless and aspirational. I remember spotting the fabulous Rachel Khoo’s kitchen in their brochure and instantly falling for her styling — shelves filled with plants and pots, a practical utensil rail, and that gorgeous green cabinetry.

As much as I wanted to go bold with green, I decided that a soft grey was the smarter choice for us at the time. Grey felt clean, neutral, and versatile — the perfect canvas for adding pops of colour through appliances, crockery, and accessories. (Though I’ll admit, green cupboards are still on my wish list for the future!)

Of course, I couldn’t demand the most expensive bespoke option, so I was thrilled to discover an affordable style from Howdens that captured the look I wanted without breaking the bank. The result? A kitchen that feels stylish, practical, and very much “us.” Every time I walk in, I’m reminded that good design doesn’t have to mean overspending — it’s about making thoughtful choices and finding inspiration in the details.

And honestly, I couldn’t be happier.
