On the Road to Thoiry (1970)

On the road to Thoiry (1970) was taken by the Swiss photographer Peter Knapp (b.1931) for the French fashion house Courrèges.

The empty road and open landscape evoke a feeling of youthfulness and adventure, while the two graphic spots of colour - the space hopper and a bright orange Renault 4 van- are playful and nostalgic at the same time. There’s so much carefree energy in this picture it seems to say that anything is possible.

With more and more of my print designs connecting to my emotions and depth of feeling, I’ve always associated this image with a sense of freedom, daring, and life-loving expression. It’s what I want to see when I’m doubting the creative process or searching for the energy to keep going with the brand—especially when the juggle feels like too much.

Words written by Orla Kiely in her book Pattern (first published 2010).
