From Raf to VB: My Solo Fashion Binge
Share
Saturday nights look a little different these days. With two young children tucked into bed and Chris (my other half) out for drinks, I get a rare moment to myself—and I know exactly how to spend it. While Chris and I rarely agree on wind-down TV, his absence means I get full control of the remote. Cue fashion and design documentaries. Bliss.
This weekend, I was spoiled for choice. The new Victoria Beckham Netflix series just dropped (more on that in a minute), but first, I found myself chasing a memory—an evening at a cinema in South Kensington watching Dior and I, the iconic behind-the-scenes look at Raf Simons’ debut at Dior. After some digging, I found it free on YouTube!
If you want to understand the whirlwind weeks before a fashion show, this film is it. Simons’ modern aesthetic, his emotional vulnerability, and that Sterling Ruby-inspired print—it’s all there. There’s been buzz about Jonathan Anderson crying at a recent Dior show, but Dior and I captured Raf at his most raw: nerves, elation, and pure creative pressure. And the result? A show staged in a Parisian apartment filled with flowers, like a dreamscape in bloom. The AW12 collection featured in the film still stuns me with its colour palette and texture.

Then came the VB documentary. I’m halfway through and, honestly, impressed. I haven’t seen Victoria near a sewing machine or cutting table yet—but let’s be real, she can afford a team for that. Her designs have evolved, and she’s earned her place in the fashion world. I even own a pair of her harem trousers. But I still find myself searching for more passion in her voice, more insight into her inspiration. She knows luxury, no doubt—but I want to feel the fire behind it.
Any other fashion documentaries I should line up for next Saturday night? Dries is calling...
