Holland Street Sensory Textile Design

'Driven by curiosity, I’ve always believed that our senses are how we truly experience life.'

A human‑centred design philosophy rooted in empathy, sensory connection and handmade craftsmanship at Holland Street.

At Holland Street, empathy is the cornerstone of everything I create. It’s not just a design principle—it’s a way of seeing the world. Driven by curiosity, I’ve always believed that our senses are how we truly experience life. Translating a client’s future, their emotions, and their essence into design language is where the magic begins. These are the human dimensions I work with: the five senses, and the deep connection we form through fabric and feeling.

Jersey is my go-to material—it offers comfort without compromising elegance. It’s tactile, cocooning, and expressive. Structuring these thoughts into a design manifesto has been an ongoing journey. What excites me most is the process of establishing an idea and watching it evolve. Human values are non-negotiable. Sensory connection is everything, and capturing that in Holland Street is my constant aim.

When I founded the brand in 2014, I centred it around four values: creativity, connection, relaxation, and love. At the time, it felt simple—even naive—but through years of refinement, those values still ring true. Imagination is essential to moving ideas forward. Humans are naturally drawn to materials; we discover the world through touch, sight, sound, scent, and emotion. I’m fascinated by how textiles and patterns speak to us—how they evoke memory and meaning.

Design, for me, is a relationship. It’s a dialogue between maker and wearer. Sampling, refining, and rethinking are vital. We’ve moved away from the image of opulent luxury toward a more meaningful notion: luxury as attention and care.

I feel relaxed in a wafting kaftan, but also empowered in a slinky one. That duality is what I strive to bring together—a comforting embrace in a social setting. We’re even exploring the idea of including handmade soap in our packaging, to deepen the emotional and sensory experience of each piece.

My toolkit is built from trade experience and life learning. Finding my voice has been cathartic, especially when I see something go from nothing to something. I often ask: how do others feel in a Holland Street piece? The last thing I want is for anyone to feel self-conscious. Removing ego and thinking of others helps me stay connected to my clients.

Wellbeing is no longer a trend—it’s a philosophy that’s reshaping design. When we prioritise human needs, design becomes transformative. That’s the future I believe in. That’s the future I’m designing for.
