What Is a Kaftan?.. and Why the Kaftan Still Captivates

A kaftan is a long, loose‑flowing robe or garment that typically reaches the floor or mid‑calf, with wide sleeves and a tunic‑style collar. Traditionally made from silk, cashmere or cotton, kaftans are often decorated with bold colours, striking patterns or embellishments, making them a favourite for summer dressing and maximalist style. Simpler versions in single colours such as white or black are also popular. The kaftan is sometimes confused with the kimono, but the kimono is a traditional Japanese garment cut in a T‑shape, fastened with an obi belt, and often hand‑painted or intricately designed.
