Holland Street & The SENSE Method™: How We Build Colour Stories
Share
A gentle guide to building emotional colour stories through the SENSE Method™, using the 60:30:10 ratio to create balanced, expressive interiors.
At Holland Street, our designers follow a simple guiding principle when creating interior palettes for the SENSE Method™: the 60:30:10 ratio. This timeless approach helps balance emotion, colour and atmosphere in a way that feels effortless and beautifully coordinated.
Sixty per cent of the scheme is your base colour — usually a warm or cool neutral that sets the emotional tone. Thirty per cent comes from one or two complementing mid‑tones that deepen the feeling. The final ten per cent is your highlight: a bolder, brighter shade that brings energy, personality and lift.
This ratio shapes every palette in the SENSE Method™, translating emotions into contemporary colour stories. Each feeling balances warm neutrals with sophisticated soft shades and touches of strong colour — celebrating cheerful, refreshing combinations of warm whites, sage and olive greens (Balanced Shamrock), mustard (Cocooned Buttery), terracotta (Feminine Romantic), soft blues (Soulful Lulworth) and deepest pinks (Daring Expressive). Interpreting these hues for today’s homes means dialling up whites to pale beiges (Cocooned Buttery), choosing colours with enough black to feel refined rather than sweet, and adding a shot of energy with our new orange‑zing shade in Carnival (Expressive Daring).
The Neutral Background
Sixty Per Cent
For calming and tranquil schemes, choose a warm, pink‑ or yellow‑tinged white or cream as your foundation. These neutrals create emotional clarity and a sense of ease. (Cocooned Buttery, Hushed, Balanced Shamrock)
For bold, daring and expressive moods, explore deeper grounding shades such as:
Carnival (Expressive and Daring) — a dark grey ground that allows exciting pops of bright accents; bold, confident and uplifting Empowered Blue — a deep navy ground that feels strong, fresh and uplifting; think Hamptons or Norfolk beach houses with plenty of white‑painted furniture and wafting white linen Radiant — another dark ground with playful, fun accents; paint dark walls and allow childlike plastic furniture and frames to brighten the space

The Mid‑Toned Layer
Thirty Per Cent
This is where the feeling deepens. You can take a softer route or a richer one — both work beautifully with warm neutrals.
Soft palette: Cocooned Earth — a deep, relaxing soft brown with neutral yet cool intensity Soulful Lulworth — a hazy blue with muted depth, lifted by white and grey accents Cocooned Buttery — a soft milky mauve; an earthy light brown with a hint of warmth

The Finishing Touch
Ten Per Cent
This final layer brings personality, emotion and lift — the spark that completes the scheme.
Carnival — a vibrant, warm orange that adds energy underlying warmth, used sparingly for maximum impact

How This Connects to the SENSE Method™
Every palette in the SENSE Method™ begins with emotion. The 60:30:10 rule simply gives structure to that feeling — helping you translate your My Three Words into a room or outfit that feels balanced, expressive and confidently yours. By combining warm neutrals, thoughtful mid‑tones and a final burst of colour, each scheme becomes a sensory experience shaped around how you want to feel.
