A few years ago, I bought a lamp that has become one of my most treasured possessions — the limited edition Anglepoise × Paul Smith Edition One. It wasn't just a purchase; it was a piece of design that became a vessel for memory, emotion, and intent. I bought it using a small inheritance from my grandfather after he passed away — a man who was a meticulous craftsman with a deep appreciation for detail. This lamp, the Type 75™ Desk Lamp – Paul Smith Edition One, is part of a celebrated collaboration between two titans of British design: Anglepoise and Paul Smith. On one hand, Anglepoise, a brand revered for its engineering ingenuity and heritage lighting, and on the other, Paul Smith — Britain’s foremost designer — known for his unparalleled mastery of colour and “classic with a twist” approach.

Originally designed by Sir Kenneth Grange, the Type 75™ lamp is a modern classic. Its constant tension spring technology, cast iron base, and chrome-plated fittings embody the robustness and functionality Anglepoise is known for. With Edition One, Paul Smith reinterpreted this form by injecting a patchwork of playful summer colours — a design that’s at once nostalgic and progressive.

Inspired by his collaboration with Land Rover and the colour palette used, Paul Smith – Britain’s foremost designer known for his mastery of colour – created the Type 75 Mini Desk Lamp – Edition Four for Anglepoise using British countryside colours.

Dominated with deep, earthy burgundy, leaden grey, sky blue, dappled green, rich clay and just a dash of fluorescent yellow, this stylish but small desk lamp is a scaled-down, more playful adaptation of the original, best-selling Type 75 desk lamp created by celebrated industrial designer, Sir Kenneth Grange.
